До побутового жанру належать твори, в яких зображено події повсякденного життя. Тут немає портретів, хоча є люди. Побутовий жанр тісно пов'язаний з історичним і набуває рис, зумовлених становленням та розвитком суспільства. Елементом побутового жанру є інтер’єр – зображення домівок, краса милих серцю речей, сцени домашнього побуту. Вигляд приміщення показує інтерес, смаки, стиль життя, звички його мешканців.
